A New Year’s Resolution You Can Enjoy

It’s 2017 and it’s time to make some New Year’s resolutions. Play the Game has one for you that will be fun to do!

This year, play games outside your comfort zone!

Pick up a game you’ve never considered. Play with people you’ve just met. Don’t let price, age range, theme or box art keep you from checking it out.

Today, we are going to look at one game you might not have considered, and one game you can play with strangers.

Might not have considered:

Battlestar Galactica – Fantasy Flight Games

Galactica Box
While this is a game based on the remake of the cult classic TV show. This game from Fantasy Flight is a traitor game at its core.

Here is how the game works:

During each player’s turn they move around the ship and fight off the attacking Cylons. Players might also do other actions to help the group. You also have to join together to resolve a crisis. Examples might be a riot among the crew or water shortages. This is where the traitor mechanic really kicks in. At the beginning of the game, each player is given a role card similar to other traitor games. If you are a traitor, your goal is to see Galactica fail in a couple of ways. A good traitor will pick and choose how to do this. Maybe you help out with this crisis to keep them off your scent, maybe next time you see them fail. It all leads up to a game of paranoia and finger pointing.

Finally if the Humans have survived and have found their new home, they win. If the Cylons have defeated Galactica, the traitors win.

If you have never seen the show, check out this game anyway. You need no prior knowledge to enjoy it. If you have played any traitor games like Resistance or Betrayal at the House on the Hill, you know what to expect. There is a lot more going on in Galactica, but it definitely ramps up the tension of the game.

Game to play with a stranger:

Rhino Hero – HABA Games

Rhino Hero is just a lot of fun. The rules are simple. Each turn you add to the tower by adding walls to the floor below. Then, you add a roof with directions on how to build the next floor. Sometimes, the Rhino Hero has to climb the building too and be placed on the new floor. The goal of the game is to use all the floor cards in your hand before your opponent does. If the tower falls, the game is also over.

Sure this game is for kids, but HABA makes sure everyone will enjoy their games regardless of age,

Why did I pick this as a game to play with a stranger? Because it’s easy to teach and is super fun for everyone. I’m going to take this game with me to every party or event I’m going to this year. It’s a great way to cap off a fun match of Magic against my opponent. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by the question “Hey, wanna play some Rhino Hero while we wait for the next round?” Also, who wouldnt be curious by this game being played at the table next to them. I say why should Magic events be all about Magic? Let’s have some fun doing other stuff too!

One of my favorite memories from an event is back in 2003  I was at Origins for the Dragon Ball Z TCG tournament and I wasn’t doing so well. Later I found myself sitting at the judge table playing Hearts with the event staff. Everyone who came up to the table was surprised to find us doing something other than DBZ and wanted to join. It was a great day to be sure.

What else can we play?

That’s entirely up to you! As time goes on, I’ll pick more games like these for you to check out, If you come across any games you played with a stranger or enjoyed a game you never considered, let us and the world know!

Let’s make 2017 a year of fun and games!
